Service Information

Several dealers have reported issues with FlashWrite* while reprogramming vehicles for campaign WVM-23. Please review the following tips to prevent and/or correct some of these issues.

VERIFY YOUR SUBARU SELECT MONITOR SOFTWARE VERSION

First, open the Subaru Select Monitor program, select "Help", then "About Application" located on the top left of the navigation bar. Next, you will see the version number of the firmware and software that is installed on your SDS system. The correct current version required to perform the campaign is October 2009, 1,20.37.4. If your version is different, you will need to contact Nuspire Support. They will walk you through the download process to ensure your Subaru SDS system is up to date and functioning properly.

"NOT SUITABLE FOR REPROGRAMMING" MESSAGE

If you encounter a 'Not Suitable for Reprogramming' message during a reprogramming session, verify that there are no trouble codes stored. The Techline has received numerous calls with this concern. After verifying the correct Pak file had been selected and getting the 'Not Suitable' message, a P-code was found stored in the ECM memory. After addressing the DTC, then clearing the memory, the update completed normally.

FLASHWRITE* ERROR CODE 4404

There has been a change in the reprogramming software for this campaign. Vehicles with automatic transmissions can no longer be programmed with the shifter in "Neutral". It must be in the "Park" position. If you receive the following error message once the reprogramming begins, the vehicle is not in Park, and the reprogramming process must be restarted. Place the transmission in Park then cycle the ignition key off then back on again prior to restarting the reprogramming process.

ERROR CODE 4013

If you receive this error message the test mode connectors need to be connected. The following vehicles do not require the test mode connectors to be connected for reprogramming:

ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM) RECOVERY PROCEDURE

There are several reasons why reprogramming may fail: low vehicle battery, loss of electrical power, dislodged cables, etc. In most cases it is NOT necessary to replace the engine control module (ECM). The following procedure should be used to recover an ECM that has failed to reprogram. Prior to performing this procedure, ensure that your SDS system is in proper working order and no cable or hardware issues are present. If hardware issues do exist, contact Nuspire Support for assistance with repairs.

RECOVERY PROCEDURE

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position for at least 15 seconds.
  2. Turn ignition switch back to the "ON" position and restart FlashWrite*.
  3. Proceed with the appropriate file selection for the vehicle specification.
  4. Once FlashWrite* begins to communicate with the vehicle, the following error message will be displayed with the appropriate ECM part number displayed:

  5. Select "Yes"  and FlashWrite* will show the current and new ECM part number screen:

  6. Select "Execute"  and FlashWrite* will begin the reprogramming process.
  7. If you incorrectly answer the "Is reprogramming in process?" question "NO", you will receive the following screen:

  8. If this is the case, turn the ignition switch off for at least 15 seconds and begin the recovery process again.

NEXT STEPS

After verifying the previous procedures and confirming that they do not correct the reprogramming issues, please contact Nuspire Support. They will verify if your Subaru SDS system is up to date and functioning properly. If not, they will refer you to the Subaru Technical Helpline for further assistance.
