WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Subaru Forester. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light to verify system is functioning correctly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Disconnect connector AB11 from right side air bag module, located under seat. See Figure. Connect test harness "F" (98299FC010), connector 1F to connector AB11. See Figure. Connect Air Bag Resistor (98299PA040) to test harness "F", connector 3F. See Figure. Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition switch on (with engine off). If AIR BAG warning light turns off after 6 seconds, replace front seat with side air bag module. If AIR BAG warning light does not turn off after 6 seconds, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 20 seconds. Disconnect connector AB20 from right seat belt pretensioner. See SEAT BELT PRETENSIONERS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. See Figure. Disconnect air bag resistor from test harness "F". Disconnect connector AB8 from air bag control module. See AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect test harness "R" (98299FE030), connector 1R to connector AB8. See Figure. Measure resistance between test harness "R", connector 3R, terminal No. 18 and test harness "F", connector 3F, terminal No. 4. Measure resistance between test harness "R", connector 3R, terminal No. 20 and test harness "F", connector 3F, terminal No. 3. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace side air bag harness and body harness.
  3. Measure resistance between test harness "R", connector 3R, terminals No. 18 and 20. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace side air bag harness and body harness.
  4. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "R", connector 3R, terminal No. 18. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "R", connector 3R, terminal No. 20. If resistance is more than one megohm, replace air bag control module. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace side air bag harness and body harness.
