WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Subaru Forester. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light to verify system is functioning correctly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Disconnect connector AB3 from air bag control module. See AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect test harness "R" (98299FE030), connector 1R to connector AB3. See Figure. Measure resistance between test harness "R", connector 3R, terminals No. 6 and 8. If resistance is 750-1000 ohms, replace air bag control module. If resistance is not 750-1000 ohms, go to next step.
- Disconnect connector AB15 from left front subsensor. See FRONT SUBSENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect test harness "H" (98299FC030), connector 1H to connector AB15. See Figure. Measure resistance between test harness "R", connector 3R, terminal No. 6 and test harness "H", connector 3H, terminal No. 5. Measure resistance between test harness "R", connector 3R, terminal No. 8 and test harness "H", connector 3H, terminal No. 6. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to step 4.
- Measure resistance between ground and test harness "R", connector 3R, terminal No. 6. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "R", connector 3R, terminal No. 8. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to step 8. If resistance is less than one megohm, go to next step.
- Disconnect connectors AB13 and AB14, located behind left kick panel. See Figure. Connect test harness "L" (98229FE000), connector 1L to connector AB13. See Fig 1. Measure resistance between test harness "R", connector 3R, terminal No. 6 and test harness "L", connector 3L, terminal No. 4. Measure resistance between test harness "R", connector 3R, terminal No. 8 and test harness "L", connector 3L, terminal No. 3. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace air bag main harness and body harness, as a unit
- Measure resistance between ground and test harness "R", connector 3R, terminal No. 2. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "R", connector 3R, terminal No. 4. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace air bag main harness and body harness, as a unit
- Connect test harness "L", connector 1L to connector AB14. Measure resistance between test harness "L", connector 3L, terminal No. 5 and test harness "H", connector 3H, terminal No. 5. Measure resistance between test harness "L", connector 3L, terminal No. 6 and test harness "H", connector 3H, terminal No. 6. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace front subsensor harness and body harness.
- Measure resistance between ground and test harness "L", connector 3L, terminal No. 5. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "L", connector 3L, terminal No. 6. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace front subsensor harness and body harness.
- Connect test harness "H", connector 2H to left front subsensor. Measure resistance between test harness "H", connector 3H, terminals No. 3 and 4. If resistance is 750-1000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 750-1000 ohms, replace left front subsensor.
- Measure resistance between ground and test harness "H", connector 3H, terminal No. 3. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "H", connector 3H, terminal No. 4. If resistance is more than one megohm, system is operating properly, diagnosis finished. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace left front subsensor.
