Code 12

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Subaru Forester. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light to verify system is functioning correctly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove glove box and disconnect passenger-side air bag module connectors AB4 and AB27. See Figure. Connect test harness "P" (98299SA020), connector 1P to air bag module connector AB4. See Fig 1. Connect Air Bag Resistor (98299PA040) to test harness "P", connectors 2P and 3P. See Figure. Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition switch on (with engine off). If AIR BAG warning light turns off after 6 seconds, replace passenger-side air bag module. See PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If AIR BAG warning light does not turn off after 6 seconds, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 20 seconds. Disconnect air bag resistor from connectors 2P and 3P. Remove lower instrument panel cover and disconnect lower clockspring connectors AB2 and AB30. Disconnect connector AB3 from air bag control module. See AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect test harness "R" (98299FE030), connector 1R to connector AB3. See Figure. Measure resistance between test harness "R", connector 2R, terminal No. 3 and test harness "P", connector 2P, terminal No. 3. Measure resistance between test harness "R", connector 2R, terminal No. 5 and test harness "P", connector 2P, terminal No. 4. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace air bag main wire harness and body wire harness.
  3. Measure resistance between test harness "R", connector 2R, terminals No. 3 and 5. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "R", connector 2R, terminal No. 3. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "R", connector 2R, terminal No. 5. If resistance is more than one megohm, replace air bag control module. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace air bag main wire harness and body wire harness.
