WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Subaru Forester. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light to verify system is functioning correctly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect test harness "N" (98299SA000), connector 1N to upper clockspring connector AB31. See Figure & Fig 1 . Connect Air Bag Resistor (98299PA040) to test harness "N", connector 2N. See Fig 2. Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition switch on (with engine off). If AIR BAG warning light turns off after 6 seconds, replace driver-side air bag module. If AIR BAG warning light does not turn off after 6 seconds, go to next step.
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 20 seconds. Disconnect test harness from connector AB31. Remove lower instrument panel cover and disconnect lower clockspring connectors AB2 and AB30. See Figure. Connect test harness "F" (98299FC010), connector 1F to connector AB2. See Fig 3. Connect Air Bag Resistor to test harness "F", connector 3F. Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition on (engine off). If AIR BAG warning light turns off after 6 seconds, replace clockspring. See COMBINATION SWITCH/CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If AIR BAG warning light does not turn off after 6 seconds, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 20 seconds. Disconnect air bag resistor from connector 3F. Remove glove box and disconnect passenger-side air bag module connectors AB4 and AB27. Disconnect connector AB3 from air bag control module. See AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect test harness "R" (98299FE030), connector 1R to connector AB3. See Figure. Measure resistance between test harness "R", connector 2R, terminal No. 2 and test harness "F", connector 3F, terminal No. 3. Measure resistance between test harness "R", connector 2R, terminal No. 4 and test harness "F", connector 3F, terminal No. 4. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace air bag main harness and body harness, as a unit
- Measure resistance between test harness "R", connector 2R, terminals No. 2 and 4. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "R", connector 2R, terminal No. 2. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "R", connector 2R, terminal No. 4. If resistance is more than one megohm, replace air bag control module. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace air bag main harness and body harness, as a unit.
