Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Perform basic diagnostic procedure. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . If DTC P0464 is only DTC set, go to next step. If DTC P0462 or P0463 also exist, diagnose and repair those codes first.
  2. Remove fuel pump assembly from fuel tank. While moving fuel level sensor float up and down, measure resistance across terminals No. 3 and No. 6 (No. 2 and No. 3 on Forester, Impreza and Outback Sport) of fuel level sensor (component side). If resistance changes smoothly, go to next step. If resistance does not change smoothly, replace fuel level sensor.
  3. Remove fuel pump assembly from fuel tank. While moving fuel sub level sensor float up and down, measure resistance across terminals No. 1 and No. 2 of fuel sub level sensor (component side). If resistance changes smoothly, repair poor terminal contact in connectors between ECM and instrument cluster. If resistance does not change smoothly, replace fuel sub level sensor. Clear memory and perform verification procedure. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  and VERIFICATION PROCEDURE  .
