Rear Knuckle/Hub: Notes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Subaru Impreza. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect ground cable from battery.
  2. Jack-up vehicle, and remove rear wheel cap and wheels.
  3. Unlock axle nut.
    CAUTION: Remove the axle nut with vehicle weight not applied on axle. Failure to follow this rule may damage the wheel bearings.
  4. Remove axle nut using a socket wrench with parking brake applied.
  5. Return parking brake lever and loosen adjusting nut. See Fig 1.
  6. Remove disc brake caliper from back plate, and suspend it from strut using a piece of wire. See Fig 2.
    NOTE: If disc rotor seizes up within hub, drive it out by installing an 8-mm bolt into bolt hole in disc rotor.
  7. Remove disc rotor from hub.
  8. Disconnect parking brake cable end. See Fig 3.
  9. Disconnect rear stabilizer from rear lateral link.
  10. Remove bolts which secure trailing link assembly to rear housing.
  11. Remove bolts which secure lateral link assembly to rear housing.
  12. Remove rear ABS sensor from back plate.
    NOTE: Be careful not to damage the oil seal lip when removing the rear drive shaft. When the rear drive shaft is to be replaced, also replace the inner oil seal with a new one.
  13. Disengage BJ from housing splines, and remove rear axle shaft assembly. See Fig 4. If it is hard to remove, use the axle shaft puller and plate.
  14. Remove bolts which secure rear housing to strut, and separate the 2. See Fig 5.
