DTC P0442: EVAP System Control Circuit Malfunction

  1. Perform basic diagnostic procedure. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE  . If any other DTCs are set, diagnose and repair those DTCs first. If DTC P0442 is only DTC set, turn ignition off. Check fuel filler cap for tightness. Check for damaged or broken seal in fuel filler cap and fuel filler pipe. Replace fuel filler cap and fuel filler pipe as necessary. If fuel filler cap and fuel filler pipe are okay, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect test mode connector leads together under left side of dash. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, activate drain valve and listen for operating sound from drain valve (underneath right rear corner of vehicle). If operating sound is heard, go to next step. If operating sound is not heard, replace drain valve.
  3. Using scan tool, activate purge control solenoid valve and listen for operating sound from purge control solenoid valve. If operating sound is heard, go to next step. If operating sound is not heard, replace purge control solenoid valve.
  4. Using scan tool, activate pressure control solenoid valve and listen for operating sound from pressure control solenoid valve. If operating sound is heard, go to next step. If operating sound is not heard, replace pressure control solenoid valve.
  5. Turn ignition off. Check for any leaks, holes larger than .04" (1.0 mm), damage, or clogged fuel lines, fuel tank, evaporative canister and evaporative system hoses. Repair or replace defective component as necessary. If there is no damage found, contact authorized Subaru dealership because probable cause is deterioration of multiple parts. Clear memory and perform verification procedure. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  and VERIFICATION PROCEDURE  .
