Tilt Steering Column: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Subaru Impreza. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Center of roll connector may also be known as clockspring connector.
  1. Set the grommet to the toe board.

  2. Insert the end of steering shaft into the toe board grommet.
  3. Tighten the steering shaft mounting bolts under instrument panel.
    1. Tightening torque:  25 N.m (2.5 kgf-m, 18.1 ft-lb)
  4. Install the knee bolster.

  5. Connect all connectors under instrument panel.
  6. Connect the AIRBAG system connector at the harness spool.
    NOTE: Make sure to apply double lock.
  7. Install the lower column cover with tilt lever held in the lowered position.
  8. Install the universal joint. See INSTALLATION  , Universal Joint.
  9. Align the center of roll connector. See ADJUSTMENTS - AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
    CAUTION: Ensure that front wheels are set in straight forward direction.
  10. Install the steering wheel. See INSTALLATION  , Steering Wheel.

    Set the steering wheel to neutral and install it onto steering shaft.

    CAUTION: Insert roll connector guide pin into guide hole on lower end of surface of steering wheel to prevent damage. Draw out AIRBAG system connector, horn connector and cruise control connectors from guide hole of steering wheel lower end.
  11. Install the AIRBAG module to the steering wheel.
    WARNING: Always refer to "Air Bag System" before performing the service operation. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
