Description & Operation: Notes

WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.

Throttle plate position is controlled by vacuum-powered actuator assembly located in engine compartment. Based on inputs from system components, control unit sends signals to solenoid-operated valves in actuator assembly to maintain constant vehicle speed. Actuator assembly consists of a vacuum valve, vent valve, safety valve and diaphragm.

Speed cannot be set if vehicle speed is less than 25 MPH. Control unit disengages system if engine speed is 6000 RPM or greater, or if control unit receives a signal indicating one or more of the following conditions exist:
