Differential Case Assembly: Reassembly

  1. Install pinion gears, thrust washer and side gear. Insert pinion shaft and drive in roll pin. Stake straight pin. Install thrust washer and side gear to left hand case. Assemble case halves. Install ring gear and tighten bolts to 42-49 ft. lbs. (57-67 N.m). See Figure .
  2. Measure pinion gear backlash by inserting dial indicator through access window of case. See Fig 2 . Backlash should be .005-.007" (.13-.18 mm). If backlash is not within specification, replace washers.
  3. Position locking end of speedometer drive gear correctly and install onto differential case. Using press and Drift (398487700), install taper roller bearing.
