Valve Assembly: Installation

  1. Apply grease to pinion gear and bearing of valve housing. Center steering rack in rack housing. If centered correctly, distance from end of rack housing to end of rack shaft is 3" (76.2 mm). Install new packing.
  2. Position valve assembly to rack housing so rack teeth face pinion. Ensure cutout portion of pinion shaft serration faces toward adjusting screw hole. Alternately tighten bolts to 14-22 ft. lbs. (20-29 N.m).

  1. Clean mating surface of valve housing-to-rack housing. Attach shim(s) to stepped lip of rack housing using Fuji Bond C (004403004 ). Use same number of shims as removed.
  2. Remove rack shaft so end of shaft protrudes 3.03" (76.9 mm) from pinion side of rack housing face. Grease pinion gear teeth and bearing. Position pinion shaft so cutout section faces sleeve boss.
  3. If top of pinion tooth is in center position when viewed from sleeve side, pinion shaft is positioned correctly. If bottom of tooth is in center, turn pinion shaft 180 degrees.
  4. Push valve assembly into rack housing. Position rack shaft as in step 2). Alternately tighten bolts to 14-22 ft. lbs. (20-29 N.m). Ensure cutout section of input shaft faces proper direction.
