Differential Assembly: Reassembly

  1. Install ball bearings, with marks facing upward, onto final gear and differential case using Bearing Installer (899580100). Assemble pinion, adjusting washer, side gear and pinion shaft on differential case side. Assemble adjusting washer and side gear on final gear side. Drive in retaining roll pin. Install differential case to ring gear and tighten bolts to 42-49 ft. lbs. (57-67 N.m).
  2. Install dial indicator and measure backlash. Install adjusting washers to obtain a backlash of .002-.006" (.05-.15 mm). See the PINION WASHER SPECIFICATION  table. Install adjusting washers with chamfered side of inside diameter toward differential side gear. After assembly, ensure gears turn smoothly.

  3. Using Oil Seat Drift (498415600), press ball bearing into bore in clutch housing. Ensure mark on bearing faces upward during installation. Install snap ring. Install differential oil seal ("L") into main case using Oil Seal Installer (498175600). Press oil seal into place until installer rests evenly against main case.
  4. Install differential oil seal ("R") into main case using oil seal installer. Press oil seal into place until installer rests evenly against main case.
