Overhaul - 4 & 5-Speed: Description
Transmission has 4 or 5 speeds with synchromesh in all forward gears. Both transmission and differential are mounted in the same 2-piece aluminum housing. A hypoid-type gear is used for the final drive. Gear shift linkage is incorporated in transmission cover. Transmission and differential are lubricated from a common oil supply. Front axle drive shafts employ constant velocity joints at transaxle drive flange and axle shaft.
Four-wheel drive models have rear drive shaft which rotates with drive pinion at gear ratio of 1 to 1. Rear drive shaft is equipped with a claw clutch for 4-wheel drive shifting. Claw clutch has conventional type synchromesh system to ensure no damage to gears when shifting to 4-wheel drive while vehicle is in motion.
