Ignition System - NIPPONDENSO Electronic: Description

The Nippondenso electronic ignition system consists of a breakerless distributor, an ignitor (control module), and an ignition coil. The ignitor, containing transistors, acts as a switching device for signals generated in the distributor by the signal rotor and signal generator.

As the signal rotor turns with the distributor shaft, its teeth (one for each cylinder) pass the signal generator. As the air gap changes with the passing of the teeth, the magnetic field varies, creating a voltage signal in the signal generator. This signal is sent to the ignitor.

The ignitor senses this signal and turns the current to the ignition coil primary windings off and on. This results in a magnetic field building and collapsing in the primary circuit of the ignition coil. The high-voltage surge from the coil secondary circuit feeds a high-voltage spark to the individual spark plugs.
