Differential Assembly: Reassembly

  1. To reassemble, reverse disassembly procedure. Install washers with chamfered edge toward gear. Install pinion gears, side gears and pinion shaft.
  2. Measure backlash between pinion gears and side gears. Ensure pinion gear tooth contacts adjacent gear tooth during measurement. Backlash should be .005-.007" (.13-.18 mm). If not within specification, install different thickness washers. Washers are available in different thicknesses. Install pin once backlash is as specified. Stake pin to differential case.
  3. Install ring gear. Tighten bolts to 42-49 ft. lbs. (57-66 N.m). Install axle shafts and snap rings. Measure clearance between shaft and side gear. Select and install snap ring to adjust clearance to 0-.008" (0-.20 mm). Snap rings are available in different thicknesses.
