Air Control Valve

  1. Disconnect connector to air control valve while engine is idling. Check that engine speed drops. Check that engine resumes original speed when connector is connected.
    NOTE: Disconnecting connector causes a big change in RPM when engine is cold. When the engine is warm, a small change or almost no change in RPM is noticed.
  2. When the engine shows no change in speed, stop engine and disconnect connector from air control valve. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position (engine off). Measure voltage across body and power terminal (BW) of air control valve connector (body side).
  3. Voltage should be 10 volts minimum. If voltage is less than specified value check the harness. Turn ignition switch to "OFF" position. Measure resistance between each terminal for connector on air control valve side.
  4. Resistance should be 7.3-13.0 ohms at a temperature of 68°-176° F (20°- 80° C). If resistance is not within specifications, replace air control valve.
  5. Measure insulation resistance between body and each terminal of connector on air control valve side. Resistance should be one milli-ohm minimum. If insulation resistance is less than specified value, replace air control valve.
  6. Connect air control valve connector. Disconnect connector from control unit. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position. Measure voltage across body and terminal No. 45 (GR) of control unit connector.
  7. Voltage should be a minimum of 10 volts. If voltage is less than specified value, check harness between air control valve and control unit.
  8. Turn ignition switch to "OFF" position. Connect connector to control unit. Monitor voltage across body and terminal No. 45 (GR) of control unit connector. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position.
  9. Voltage should be one volt maximum for approximately one minute after ignition switch is turned to "ON" position. If voltage is not within specification, problem is either poor contact of terminal or faulty control unit.
  10. Turn ignition to "OFF" position. Disconnect air control valve hose. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position. Look through open end of pipe. Ensure that valve moves from fully closed position to fully open position one minute after ignition switch is turned to "ON" position. If valve does not operate properly, replace air control valve.
