Tilt Mechanism: Installation

  1. Apply grease to shaft lower bearing surface. Install bearing, "O" ring, washer and snap ring onto steering shaft. Install springs in ignition switch grooves.
  2. Install inner and outer needle bearings and races into ignition switch. Install inner stop ring and outer stop ring and washer. Apply grease to inside of inner and outer needle bearings.
  3. Install universal joint shaft to ignition switch. Make sure 2.29-2.30" (58.1-58.4 mm) of shaft smooth section protrudes from ignition switch. Turn shaft to check for smooth operation.
  4. Apply grease to column friction surface at tilt bracket. Install wave washer and tilt bracket. Apply grease to tilt bracket bushing and shaft. Install bushing, shaft, washer and snap ring.
  5. Install pivot bolt to column. Temporarily attach lock gear shaft and tilt lever shaft to column. Apply grease to both shafts. Insert lock gear guide pin into tilt lever groove. Install tilt lever and lock gear to their shafts.
  6. Apply grease to lock, sector gear teeth and roller surfaces. Attach spacer to lock gear. Install plate, aligning holes with pivot bolt, lock gear shaft and lever shaft.
  7. Temporarily tighten pivot bolt, lock gear shaft and lever shaft. Apply grease to lever spring and install tube on spring. Install spring to tilt lever and plate.
  8. Move lever up and down and adjust clearance between lever and plate cutout portion to .16-.31" (4-8 mm). Tighten nuts. Guide universal joint through tilt bracket hole.
  9. Install ignition switch. Install steering shaft into column tube lower end until universal joint serration reaches tube. Align shaft bearing and tube holes and install lock washer and set screw. Tighten universal joint clamp bolt.
  10. Apply grease to balance springs. Install tubes on springs. Install springs and tension cords. Ensure tilt lever is locked at each position when operated.
  11. Install combination switch. Clamp ignition and combination switch harnesses. Install column covers. Attach clips to column bracket. Install column to body.
