Removal [05/2013 - 01/2014]

WARNING:
  • Some of these service operations affect the SRS. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS before servicing the steering column. Refer to PRECAUTION [05/2013 - 01/2014] .
  • Be sure to read Precaution thoroughly before servicing. Refer to PRECAUTION [05/2013 - ] .
  1. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    WARNING:

    Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

    NOTE:

    When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected. Refer to INITIALIZATION [05/2013 - 01/2014] .

  3. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to REMOVAL [05/2013 - 01/2014] 

  4. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER 
    NOTE:

    Removing the steering column cover incorrectly will cause the steering column cover to break.

    1. Push the right and left sides of the lower cover and detach the 4 claws.

    2. Insert your fingers into the opening of the tilt lever of the lower cover to detach the claw.

      HINT: 

      Spread the claw to detach it.

    3. Turn the lower cover to detach the 2 claws and remove the lower cover as shown in the illustration.

    4. Detach the claw and 2 pins and remove the upper cover.

  5. REMOVE COMBINATION SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the connectors from the combination switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly.
    2. Use pliers to hold the clamp and raise the claw with a screwdriver. Remove the combination switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.

  6. REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET 
    1. Fold back the floor carpet, and then remove the 2 clips and column hole cover silencer sheet.

  7. DISCONNECT NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the bolt.

      NOTE:

      Do not disconnect the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering intermediate shaft.

    2. Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and steering intermediate shaft.

    3. Disconnect the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering intermediate shaft.
  8. REMOVE UPPER INSTRUMENT PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to REMOVAL [05/2013 - 01/2014]

  9. REMOVE LOWER NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY  . Refer to REMOVAL [05/2013 - 01/2014] - Step 3
  10. REMOVE BRAKE PEDAL RETURN SPRING 
    1. Remove the return spring.
  11. REMOVE STOP LIGHT SWITCH ASSEMBLY  . Refer to REMOVAL [05/2013 - ] - Step 1
  12. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the connectors and detach the wire harness clamps from the power steering ECU assembly.
    2. Detach the wire harness clamps from the steering column assembly.
    3. Remove the bolt, 2 nuts and steering column assembly.

      NOTE:
      • Do not release the tilt lever when the steering column assembly is not installed on the vehicle.
      • Do not drop or strike the steering column assembly. If dropped or struck, replace it with a new one.
  13. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the bolt.

      NOTE:

      Do not remove the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering column assembly.

    2. Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and steering column assembly.

    3. Remove the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering column assembly.
