Steering Column Assembly: Removal: Removal

WARNING:

Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing

Refer to PRECAUTION .

  1. POSITION FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    WARNING:

    Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

  3. REMOVE STEERING PAD  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 2
  4. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY 
    1. Fully extend and tilt up the steering wheel.
    2. Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.

    3. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and the steering main shaft.
    4. Disconnect the connectors from the spiral cable.
    5. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.

        • 09951-05010

        • 09953-05020

      NOTE:

      Apply a small amount of grease to the threads and tip of SST (center bolt) before use.

  5. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN LOWER COVER 
    1. Remove the 3 screws, disengage the 2 claws, release the tilt lever and remove the steering column lower cover.

  6. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN UPPER COVER 
    1. Disengage the claw and remove the steering column upper cover.

  7. REMOVE COMBINATION SWITCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect all connectors from the turn signal switch with spiral cable.
    2. Use pliers to hold the clamp and raise the claw with a screwdriver. Remove the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.

  8. SEPARATE FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM WEATHERSTRIP RH  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 4
  9. SEPARATE FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM WEATHERSTRIP LH  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 5
  10. REMOVE FRONT PILLAR GARNISH RH  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 35
  11. REMOVE FRONT PILLAR GARNISH LH  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 36
  12. REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 2
  13. REMOVE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 3
  14. REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH CENTER PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 10
  15. REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL RETAINER  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 11
  16. REMOVE GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR ASSEMBLY  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 12
  17. REMOVE UPPER INSTRUMENT PANEL  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 13
  18. DISCONNECT POWER STEERING ECU

    1. Detach the power steering motor harness and torque sensor wire harness clamps from the power steering ECU side.
    2. Disconnect the 2 steering column assembly connectors from the power steering ECU.
  19. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 10
  20. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER TRAY  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 19
  21. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SUB REINFORCEMENT

    1. Remove the 2 bolts and remove the instrument panel sub reinforcement.
  22. REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET 
    1. Pull back the floor carpet, remove the 2 clips and remove the column hole cover silencer sheet.

  23. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

    1. Loosen bolt A.
    2. Place matchmarks on the steering intermediate assembly and steering gear assembly.
    3. Remove bolt B and detach the steering intermediate assembly from the steering gear assembly.
    4. Place matchmarks on the steering intermediate assembly and steering column assembly.
    5. Remove bolt C and detach the steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering column assembly.
  24. REMOVE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER PUSH ROD CLEVIS  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 8
  25. REMOVE BRAKE PEDAL SUPPORT  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 9
  26. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect all connectors and detach all wire harness clamps from the steering column assembly.
    2. Remove the 3 bolts and remove the steering column assembly from the instrument panel reinforcement assembly.
