Automatic Transaxle Assembly: Removal

  1. REMOVE HOOD SUB-ASSEMBLY 
  2. REMOVE BATTERY 
    NOTE: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
  3. REMOVE WINDSHIELD WIPER LINK ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the windshield wiper link (see REMOVAL ).
  4. REMOVE COWL TOP PANEL OUTER 
  5. REMOVE NO. 2 CYLINDER HEAD COVER 
  6. REMOVE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove air cleaner (see REMOVAL ).
  7. REMOVE AIR CLEANER BRACKET 
    1. Disconnect the wire harness clamp.
    2. Remove the 2 bolts, air cleaner bracket and transmission control cable support.

  8. DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the nut from the control shaft lever.
    2. Disconnect the control cable from the control shaft lever.
    3. Remove the clip and disconnect the control cable from the control cable bracket.

  9. REMOVE NO. 1 TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and bracket.

  10. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Remove the bolt and disconnect the wire harness clamp bracket.

  11. DISCONNECT CONNECTOR 
    1. Disconnect the transmission wire connector.
    2. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    3. Disconnect the transmission revolution sensor connector.

  12. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL 
  13. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER RH 
  14. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER LH 
  15. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the front exhaust pipe (see REMOVAL ).
  16. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID 
    1. Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain ATF.
    2. Install a new gasket and the drain plug.
  17. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY RH 
    1. Remove the front drive shaft (see REMOVAL ).
  18. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY LH 
    1. Remove the front drive shaft (see REMOVAL ).
  19. DISCONNECT OIL COOLER HOSE 
    1. Using pliers, grip the claws of the 2 clips and disconnect the oil cooler hoses (inlet and outlet).

      HINT:

      Use a container to catch the fluid.

  20. SUSPEND ENGINE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the engine hangers with the bolts in the correct direction.

      Engine hanger: Part No. 12281-21010 

      Bolt: Part No. 91642-81025 

      Torque: 40 N*m (408 kgf*cm, 30 ft.*lbf)

    2. Attach the engine chain hoist to the engine hangers.
      NOTE: Do not attempt to hang the engine by hooking the chain to any other parts.
  21. REMOVE DRIVE SHAFT HEAT INSULATOR SUBASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and drive shaft heat insulator.

  22. REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the flywheel housing side cover.

    2. Remove the nut and disconnect the starter wire.
    3. Disconnect the connector.
    4. Remove the 2 bolts and starter.
  23. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Support the automatic transaxle with a transmission jack.

  24. DISCONNECT ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET LH 
    1. Remove the bolt and ground cable from the engine mounting bracket.

    2. Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the engine mounting bracket from the engine mounting insulator.

  25. DISCONNECT ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR REAR 
    1. Remove the bolt and nut, and disconnect the engine mounting insulator rear from the engine mounting bracket.

  26. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the front suspension crossmember (see REMOVAL ).
  27. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET REAR 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and engine mounting bracket from the automatic transaxle.

  28. REMOVE FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER 
    1. Remove the flywheel housing under cover.

  29. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Turn the crankshaft to gain access and remove the 6 torque converter mounting bolts while holding the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench.

      HINT:

      There will be one white colored bolt.

    2. Remove the 7 bolts.
    3. Remove the automatic transaxle from the engine.

  30. DISCONNECT NO. 1 OIL COOLER INLET TUBE 
    1. Using SST, disconnect the oil cooler inlet tube.

      SST 09023-12701

  31. DISCONNECT NO. 1 OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE 
    1. Using SST, disconnect the oil cooler outlet tube.

      SST 09023-12701 

  32. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET LH 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and engine mounting bracket from the automatic transaxle.

  33. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUBASSEMBLY

  34. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the torque converter clutch from the automatic transaxle.
