Steering Column Replacement

Steering Column Replacement

Callout Component Name
NOTE: Secure the steering wheel utilizing a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:
  • The steering column
  • The intermediate shaft
  • The steering gear

After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.

Preliminary Procedures

  1. Remove the knee bolster panel. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .
  2. Remove the knee bolster bracket. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement .
  3. Remove the steering column trim panels. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement .
  4. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement (good cell) .
1 Ignition Switch Electrical Connector
2 Steering Column Pinch Bolt
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice .

Tip:  Discard bolt after use.

Tighten:  45 N.m (33 lb ft)

3 Steering Column Pinch Bolt Nut
Tip:  Separate the intermediate shaft from the steering column.
4 Steering Column Support Bolt

Tighten:  25 N.m (18 lb ft)

5 Steering Column Mounting Nut

Tighten:  25 N.m (18 lb ft)

6 Steering Column
Tip:  Disconnect the steering wheel position sensor electrical connector.
