Diagnostic System Check - Engine Electrical

  1. Perform battery inspection/test. If battery passes test, go to next step.
  2. Install a scan tool. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Does the scan tool power up? If yes, go to next step. If no, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP under SYSTEM TESTS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Attempt to communicate with each of the following modules on the class 2 serial data circuit: The body control module (BCM) The engine control module (ECM) Does the scan tool communicate with any module on the class 2 serial data circuit? If yes, go to next step. If no, see NO COMMUNICATION ON CLASS 2 DATA LINK under SYSTEM TESTS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES.
  4. Select the Display DTCs function for the BCM and PCM. Record all of the displayed DTCs, the DTC status, and the module which set the DTC. Does the scan tool display any DTCs? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS .
  5. Does the scan tool display any DTCs which begin with "U"? If yes, see NO COMMUNICATION ON CLASS 2 DATA LINK under SYSTEM TESTS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES. If no, go to next step.
  6. Does the scan tool display DTC B1000, or B1001? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in GENERATORS & REGULATORS in CHARGING SYSTEM in ELECTRICAL.
