Test Procedure

  1. Perform battery inspection/test. If battery passes test, go to next step.
  2. Install a scan tool. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Does the scan tool power up? If yes, go to next step. If no, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP in SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES .
    NOTE: The engine may start during the following step. Turn OFF the engine as soon as you have observed the Crank power mode.
  3. With a scan tool, observe the Power Mode parameter in the Ignition data display of the body control module (BCM). Rotate the ignition switch through all positions while observing the class 2 Power Mode parameter. Does the ignition switch parameter reading match the ignition switch position for all switch positions? If yes, go to step  5 . If no, see POWER MODE MISMATCH under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Attempt to communicate with the engine control module (ECM). Does the scan tool communicate with the ECM? If yes, go to next step. If no, see NO COMMUNICATION ON CLASS 2 DATA LINK under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES.
  5. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Attempt to communicate with the BCM. Does the scan tool communicate with the BCM? If yes, go to next step. If no, see NO COMMUNICATION ON CLASS 2 DATA LINK under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES.
  6. Select the Display DTCs function for the BCM and PCM. Record all of the displayed DTCs, the DTC status, and the module which set the DTC. Does the scan tool display any DTCs? If yes, go to next step. If no, see SYMPTOMS  .
  7. Does the scan tool display any ECM DTCs which begin with "U"? If yes, see NO COMMUNICATION ON CLASS 2 DATA LINK under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES. If no, go to next step.
  8. Does the scan tool display any BCM DTCs which begin with "U"? If yes, see NO COMMUNICATION ON CLASS 2 DATA LINK under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES. If no, go to next step.
  9. Does the scan tool display DTC B1000, B1001, B1004, B1007, or B1009? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in GENERATORS & REGULATORS in CHARGING SYSTEM in ELECTRICAL.
