Shift Linkage

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Saturn LW200 and 2002 Saturn L200. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Pull up control lever assembly boot to disengage from console. See Fig 1 . Move shift lever to 5th/reverse gate and use a 3/8" punch to hold in place. See Fig 2 .
  2. Note the original position of the A.I.R. components. Remove clamp from A.I.R. hose behind the cooling fan. See Fig 3 . Separate the A.I.R. tube from the hose and push the tube back towards the transaxle.
  3. Remove the hose clip holding the two power steering lines together. See Fig 4 . Lock transaxle shift control shaft in 5th/reverse gate.
  4. There is a hole on top of transaxle that will have either a spring loaded locking pin or a hole plug. See Fig 5 . If hole contains a spring loaded locking pin, depress pin to lock transaxle shift control shaft in 5th/reverse gate. If hole contains a plug, remove plug and insert Shift Linkage Lock Pin (87-92-335) in hole to lock transaxle shift control shaft in 5th/reverse gate. If plug is not damage, it can be reused.
  5. NOTE: If you cannot depress the pin or fully install shift linkage lock pin, loosen the pinch bolt securing the control assembly rod to the control shaft lever assembly. See Fig 6 .
  6. Rotate transaxle shift control shaft clockwise (towards passenger side of vehicle) until the locking pin can be depressed, or shift linkage lock pin can be fully installed.
  7. Tighten pinch bolt securing control assembly rod to control shaft lever assembly. Tighten shift control shaft rod-to-control lever assembly pinch bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  8. Release transaxle shift control shaft. If transaxle has spring loaded locking pin, remove punch from shift lever and rock lever back and forth until lever can be moved freely. If transaxle hole plug was damaged during removal, install new plug during reassembly. If there was a plug in the transaxle hole, remove punch from shift lever, remove shift linkage lock pin, and reinstall plug.
  9. Install the hose clip to the 2 power steering lines. Pull the A.I.R. tube back to the original position. The clamp must be installed with the locking portion facing down. Insert the tube into hose and install clamp.
  10. NOTE: There is a stand-off clip between the A.I.R. tube and the wiring harness at the front of the transaxle. This must be in place to eliminate the possibility of chafing between the tube and the harness.
  11. Ensure the stand-off clip between the A.I.R. tube and the wiring harness is installed correctly. See Fig 7 . Snap control lever boot into console opening.
