Shifter Control Housing: Installation

  1. Clean gasket surfaces and install the shift housing gasket to the case. Ensure the shift housing is completely down on case before installing bolts. Tightening bolts on a misaligned housing will damage the case.
  2. Clean and lubricate fasteners with Saturn Transaxle Fluid. Wipe off excess fluid and install. Install the shifter housing assembly on the case. See Figure .
  3. Tighten shift control housing-to-case bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Connect back-up light switch harness connector.
  4. Install battery tray and bolts. One bolt is located in fender well (1). See Figure . Tighten battery tray-to-frame rail bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  5. Install PCM and PCM attachment bolts. Tighten PCM attachment bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  6. Reconnect PCM J2 (Black 28-way) harness connector. Ensure battery tray is clean. Ensure the battery cable ends are clean and free of corrosion (clean with a wire brush).
  7. Ensure the battery is in good physical condition (e.g., no cracks, or obvious damage) and the terminals are clean. Install battery carefully in the battery tray; ensuring the terminals do not short against any metal during the installation.
  8. Install battery hold-down retainer, locking the battery into the tray. Install and tighten the hold-down retainer nut and screws. See Figure . Tighten battery hold down-to-battery tray fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  9. Connect battery cables (attaching positive first, then negative). Tighten battery cable terminal bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  10. Install air cleaner and duct assembly. See AIR CLEANER & DUCT ASSEMBLY  .
