NOTE: All service replacement shift cables will have the bolt-in type pass-through grommet. The bolt-in type cable pass-through grommet is installed from the inside of the vehicle.
  1. For service replacement shift cables, perform the following steps:
    • Separate and fold back sound deadener from front of dash.
    • Place cables and retaining plate through front of dash and push grommet into opening, ensuring to properly align grommet pilot into front of dash.
    • Raise and support the vehicle.
    • NOTE: Ensure insulation material does not become trapped between grommet and front of dash.
    • Place retaining plate on studs and install nuts. See Figure . Tighten shift cable pass-through grommet nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  2. NOTE: The snap-in type cable pass-through grommet is installed from outside of vehicle.
  3. For production shift cables, perform the following steps:
    • Raise and support the vehicle.
    • Guide cables through cable pass-through hole in floor pan.
    • Insert cable pass-through grommet into cable pass-through hole in floor pan, engaging passenger side of grommet first. Snap driver's side of grommet into place by pressing inward and toward passenger side of vehicle.
  4. Lower vehicle. DO NOT drag boot through bracket hole as boot damage may occur. Insert cables into clutch housing and install retainers.
  5. Use care not to kink cables and ensure cables are not crossed. The knurled edge on the shift cable must face upward. Connect the cables to the shift arms on the shift control housing and install retainers. See Figure .
  6. Install air cleaner housing and duct assembly. Install shifter control assembly. See SHIFTER CONTROL ASSEMBLY  . Replace sound deadening material and resecure to front of dash. Replace carpeting. Enable SIR system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
