Valve Body: Installation

NOTE: Install new gasket during reassembly. Clean and lubricate fasteners with Saturn Transaxle Fluid. Wipe off excess fluid.
  1. Valve body-to-case bolts must be placed in valve body prior to installation. Lower valve body into case and insert manual link into manual valve. See Fig 1 . Install and finger tighten valve body-to-case dowel bolts first. This procedure must be followed to ensure valve body is properly aligned to case. For reference, the bolts are identified as follows: (1) valve body-to-case dowel bolts; (2) upper-to-lower valve body dowel bolts; (3) bolt holding upper and lower valve body. See Fig 2 .
  2. Clean and lubricate fasteners with Saturn Transaxle Fluid. Wipe off excess fluid and install. Tighten valve body-to-case bolts using tightening sequence shown in illustration. See Fig 3 . Over-tightening bolts can cause valves to bind. Tighten valve body assembly bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . For locations of valve body bolts, refer to illustration. See Fig 4 .
  3. Clean transaxle case and valve body cover sealing surfaces with Saturn Choke and Brake Cleaner or equivalent, applied with a clean shop towel. Align valve body cover gasket on valve body cover and install on transaxle case. When installing valve body cover, make sure to properly tighten the valve body cover bolts using tightening sequence shown. See Fig 5 . Tighten valve body cover-to-case bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. Verify torque of the valve body cover bolts to account for gasket relaxation using tightening sequence shown. See Fig 5 . Install and tighten master cylinder-to-booster nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install and tighten ABS mid-rail bracket bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Connect transaxle solenoid harness connector, being careful not to over-tighten. See Figure .
  5. Tighten transaxle connector bolt to specification. Install battery tray. Install battery tray bolts. One bolt is located in fender well. Tighten battery tray-to-frame rail bolts to specification. Install PCM and attachment bolts. See Figure . Tighten PCM-to-battery tray bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Connect PCM connector J2 (Black 28-way) and engage locking device.
  6. Make sure battery tray is clean. Make sure battery cable ends are clean and free of corrosion. Clean if necessary. Make sure battery is in good physical condition (e.g., no cracks, or obvious damage) and terminals are clean. Install battery carefully in battery tray, make sure terminals do not short against any metal during installation.
  7. Install battery hold-down retainer, locking battery into tray. Install and tighten hold-down retainer nut and screws. See Figure . Tighten battery case bracket stud and nut to specification. Install positive battery cable first and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  8. Install negative battery cable last and tighten to specification. Install air cleaner and duct assembly. See AIR CLEANER & DUCT ASSEMBLY  . Set clock.
