Fuel System Cleaning

NOTE: When flushing fuel tank, handle the fuel and water mixture as a hazardous material. Handle fuel and water mixture in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  1. Release fuel system pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE . Remove fuel tank. See FUEL TANK . Remove pump module. See FUEL PUMP MODULE . See Figure.
  2. Disconnect fuel feed lines at engine. Using compressed air, blow out the fuel feed line. Catch fuel in a container at opposite end of line. Remove EVAP canister from fuel tank. See EVAP CANISTER .
  3. Inspect inlet filter on pump. If filter is plugged or damaged, replace fuel pump module assembly. Flush fuel tank with hot water for at least 6 minutes. Drain water from fuel tank. Ensure all debris or contamination are removed.
  4. Reinstall EVAP canister to fuel tank. Reinstall all disconnected lines and harness connectors. Reinstall fuel tank. Fill fuel tank with at least 6 gallons of clean fuel. Raise and support vehicle. Install the 5/16" male quick connect adapter from the Fuel Flow/Pressure Adapter (SA9127E-7) to fuel feed line.
  5. Install drain hose to adapter and place other end in a suitable container. Using scan tool, activate fuel pump for 1-2 minutes. This will pump about 2 quarts of fuel and purge any debris from fuel pump.
  6. NOTE: Always replace plastic fuel line retainers whenever fuel supply lines are disconnected.
  7. Reconnect fuel lines. Energize fuel pump and check all connections for leaks. Start engine. Using scan tool, perform Service Bay Diagnostic Test.
