Steering Wheel: Removal

  1. Disable SIR system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  . Remove driver-side air bag module. See AIR BAG (INFLATOR) MODULE  . On models equipped with cruise control, disconnect cruise control switch connector, and disconnect harness from steering wheel.
  2. Ensure wheel are in straight ahead position. Remove steering wheel attachment nut, and discard. Install Steering Wheel Puller (J42578) by fitting puller legs into steering wheel puller holes. Install puller bridge over puller legs, and finger tighten nuts on legs. Insert center bolt through bridge, and align with steering column shaft. Tighten center bolt until wheel is disengaged. Remove wheel while guiding wiring through wheel opening.
  3. Insert Yellow tab (if available), or apply tape, to prevent SIR coil assembly from rotating. If SIR coil assembly has rotated, see CENTERING SIR COIL ASSEMBLY  under ADJUSTMENTS.
