Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, monitor each gear position while moving gear shift through all gears. If scan tool displays each gear position correctly, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If scan tool does not display each gear position correctly, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect transaxle range switch. See Figure or Figure . Using DVOM, measure voltage at transaxle range switch connector terminals "A" (Black/White wire), "B" (Yellow wire), "C" (Gray wire) and "D" (White wire). See Figure. If each circuit has approximately 10 volts, go to step  4. If each circuit does not have approximately 10 volts, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM J1 connector. Check continuity between circuit that does not have 10 volts and ground. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in circuit. If continuity does not exist, repair open in circuit or faulty PCM.
  4. Using scan tool, monitor each gear position while moving gear shift through all gears. If scan tool displays DISCONNECTED in all gear positions, check transaxle range switch connector. If connector is okay, replace transaxle range switch. If scan tool does not display DISCONNECTED in all gear positions, replace PCM.
