DTC P0500: Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit: Description

Output Speed Sensor (OSS) produces an AC voltage of different amplitude and frequency depending on velocity of output shaft. OSS produces signal from 16 evenly spaced machined notches on transaxle differential carrier. OSS produces a readable AC voltage signal when vehicle speed is greater than 3 MPH. OSS signal is sent to PCM to determine velocity of output shaft. DTC will set when PCM does not detect an OSS signal for a certain length of time.
