Air Pressure Tests: Notes
A "No Drive" condition can exist, even with correct transmission fluid pressure, due to inoperative clutches. Inoperative components can be located through a series of checks by substituting air pressure for fluid pressure. To check component, drain transmission fluid. Remove oil pan, gasket and valve body. See TRANSAXLE DISASSEMBLY .
Using shop air (80-100 psi maximum), apply air pressure to indicated points. See Figure . A dull "clunk" should be heard or movement felt when clutch is applied. Clutch should hold pressure for about 1-2 seconds before slowly releasing.
If a leak cannot be heard or felt, and clutch does not apply or hold pressure, it may be necessary to apply a small amount of ATF around outside of clutch housing or clutch apply plate face and retest.
If no air leak at clutch can be found, leak is most likely not a cut or torn clutch piston seal. Potential causes for leakage are listed in the following hydraulic circuit tests.
