Variable Effort Steering Test
- Disconnect high pressure line at power steering pump, and install power steering System Tester (SST SA9134C), or equivalent. Install proper scan tool to data link connector. Open gate valve on power steering system tester.
- Run engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Replace any fluid lost during power steering system tester installation. Bleed system if necessary. See HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING under LUBRICATION.
- Using scan tool, command VES actuator to provide FULL ASSIST (0 percent duty cycle). Increase engine speed to 1500 RPM, and maintain this speed while observing flow rate. Flow rate should be 2.35-2.85 gal/min (8.88-10.77 L/min). If not within range, replace VES actuator. To remove and install VES actuator, see POWER STEERING PUMP under OVERHAUL.
- Using scan tool, command VES actuator to provide NO ASSIST. Increase engine speed to 1500 RPM, and maintain this speed while observing flow rate. Flow rate should be .40-.90 gal/min (1.51-3.40 L/min). If not within range, replace VES actuator. After completing flow test, stop engine and remove power steering reservoir cap. This will release system pressure prior to removing tester.
