Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Raise and support drive wheels. Start engine. Rotate drive wheels at greater than 3 MPH. If scan tool reads a speed, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  . If scan tool does not read a speed, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector J1. Using a DVOM, check resistance between PCM harness connector terminals J1-27 (Purple wire) and J1-72 (Yellow wire). If resistance is 800-1600 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 800 ohms, go to step  4 . If resistance is greater than 1600 ohms, go to step  5 .
  3. Disconnect VSS harness connector. Check continuity between ground and VSS harness connector terminal "B" (Purple wire). If continuity exists, check for short in circuit. If continuity does not exist, check sensor for correct torque and terminal tightness. Repair as necessary. If no problem is found, replace PCM.
  4. Disconnect VSS harness connector. Check continuity between VSS harness connector terminals "A" (Yellow wire) and "B" (Purple wire). If continuity exists, check circuit for short to each other. If continuity does not exist, replace VSS.
  5. Disconnect VSS harness connector. Check for open circuit between PCM and VSS harness connector terminals "A" (Yellow wire) and "B" (Purple wire). If continuity exists for both circuits, check for terminal tightness at connectors. Repair as necessary. If terminals are okay, replace PCM. If continuity does not exist, repair open in circuits.
