Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
  2. Start engine. Raise engine speed to less than 2000 RPM. Using scan tool, monitor charging voltage. If voltage reading is 13.5-14.5 volts, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If voltage reading is not 13.5-14.5 volts, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument panel 16-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using a DVOM, check voltage at instrument panel harness connector Red wire terminal. If battery voltage is present, repair circuit (Red wire) for short to ground in generator. If battery voltage is not present, repair circuit (Red wire) for short to ground in ECM.
