TRANS BINDS IN REVERSE/CREEPS IN NEUTRAL (SERVICE PROCEDURE)

Model(s): 1991-94 Saturn

Bulletin No.: Saturn 91-T-37A

Date: 11/01/1993

SUBJECT

Automatic Transaxle Binds in Reverse and Creeps in Neutral After Repair (Check for Proper Clutch Pack Installation) Due to revisions in the affected model years, this bulletin supersedes bulletin 91-T-37, which should be discarded.

MODELS AFFECTED

1991-94 Saturns equipped with automatic transaxle (MP6/MP7)

CONDITION

The transaxle binds when shifted into R (Reverse), and the vehicle creeps when in N (Neutral) after transaxle has been repaired in the field.

CAUSE

During reassembly of the transaxle in the field, it is possible to install a gear and hub assembly into the clutch pack without engaging all the clutch plates in the pack. If the clutch and gear assembly are installed with the clutch plate tangs not aligned, the hub of the gear will pinch against the plate that has not been engaged and cause the clutch to bind - up.

CORRECTION

This bulletin provides a way to verify the correct assembly of clutch assemblies during field repairs. The following procedure must be used during transaxle assembly to make sure that all clutches are properly assembled.

INSTALLATION OF GEAR/HUB ASSEMBLY INTO CLUTCH

While installing the clutch pack, rotate the gear and hub assembly back and forth to align the clutch plates. If you are not sure that all the clutch plates have been engaged, lift the gear out of the clutch housing and verify that all clutch tangs are aligned.

VERIFY PROPER INSTALLATION

After the input and output shaft nuts have been installed, verify proper operation.

  1. Engage park pawl.
  2. Rotate the input shaft by turning the 1st clutch housing. The clutch housing should turn freely in both directions.
    1. If input shaft turns freely in only one direction, the 1st clutch is binding.
    2. If input shaft will not turn freely in either direction, 2nd, 3rd or 4th clutch is binding.
