Steering Gear: Installation

  1. Install steering gear and tighten mounting bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE  at the end of this article. Connect intermediate shaft to steering gear shaft. Tighten pinch bolt to specification. Connect pressure and return hoses to steering gear. Install left inner fender splash shield.
  2. Thoroughly clean and lubricate tie rod end threads. Lubricate threaded part of stud only. Install tie rod end studs into steering knuckles.
  3. Install and tighten tie rod end castle nut to specification. If hole in castle nut is not aligned with hole in stud, tighten nut further, but only as far as necessary to install cotter pin. DO NOT  loosen nut to align holes. Install NEW cotter pins. Connect negative battery cable.
  4. Install wheels. Tighten wheel lug nuts to specification. Lower vehicle. Set toe as necessary. Fill and bleed hydraulic system. See HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING  under LUBRICATION.
