SUBJECT

Service Information on Antilock Brake System Diagnostic Codes 44, 45 and 46 (Replace ABS Modulator and Brake Master Cylinder Assembly)

MODELS AFFECTED

All 1991 and 1992 Saturns with antilock brakes.

PURPOSE

In order to perform root-cause analysis on antilock brake system (ABS) failures, Delco Chassis Division has requested that the entire ABS modulator and master brake cylinder assembly be replaced and returned for analysis in the event of a stored ABS diagnostic code 44, 45 or 46.

NOTE: The information in this bulletin is valid only until March 31, 1992.

PROCEDURE

NOTE: If ABS diagnostic code 44, 45 or 46 is not stored in the ABS module, proceed with ABS service procedures in the "Brakes Service Manual."

Using the portable diagnostic tool (PDT) verify that an ABS diagnostic code 44, 45 or 46 is stored in memory.
Record all codes stored in memory, including all information in malfunction history, or load PDT results into the Service Stall System (SSS).
Clear all codes.
Initialize the ABS system by driving the vehicle above 8 K/mh (5 mph).
Check for ABS diagnostic codes.
1. If code 44, 45 or 46 does not reset, repeat steps 3 and 4. If any of the codes still do not reset, proceed with ABS service procedures in the "Brakes Service Manual."
2. If code 44, 45 or 46 resets after codes were cleared, replace entire ABS modulator and brake master cylinder assembly according to "Antilock Brake Control Assembly" procedures in the "Brakes Service Manual." Do not disassemble the ABS modulator and brake master cylinder assembly.
Carefully package the failed ABS modulator and brake master cylinder for immediate return to Delco Chassis Division. The replacement part includes a pre-printed address label for failed part return. Provide a copy of the service invoice and a listing of the diagnostic codes (including malfunction history) that were recorded in step 2. Also, please write down and include the answers to the following questions:
- Has the customer complained of any excessive noise from the antilock brake system?
- Has the customer experienced any other ABS or base brake problems?
- Did the customer perform an ABS stop in the drive cycle prior to the antilock brake light turning on?

PARTS REQUIREMENTS

Obtain the ABS modulator and brake master cylinder (P/N 21010914) by calling your Saturn Service Parts Operation (SSPO) parts analyst at 1-800-828-2112 (prompt #2). The replacement part will be sent directly from Delco Chassis Division at no charge using overnight freight.
