Passenger Sensor Preload Test
The passenger presence system consists of an electronic control module, a detection mat, wiring harness and an indicator for passenger airbag ON/OFF. The detection mat consists of several flexible, conducting metal bands and is located under the seat cushion upholstery. The metal bands send and receive low electrical fields. The measured capacitance in the electrical field is used to determine what type of passenger is sitting in the passenger seat. If the passenger seat foam cushion, upholstery or heating pad have been removed/installed for any reason, the system will look for loads in the PPS module. A new PPS module does not require unlocking before the first installation test.
NOTE:
- The passenger seat must be empty before the PPS module is checked. If anything is on the seat, this will affect the calibration and performance of the PPS module. The brightness of instrument illumination will vary while the preload test is being performed. This is normal during the preload test and does not indicate any additional system fault.
- DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - VEHICLE must be performed after the Passenger Sensor Preload Test to ensure that the system is operating properly.
