Service Precautions
Observe these precautions when working with air bag systems:
- Disable Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before servicing any SRS or steering column component. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
- Work on the AIRBAG system should only be carried out by authorized service workshops.
- All work must take place in accordance with given instructions and be carried out with care. There is a risk of personal injury with incorrect handling.
- Wear protective glasses and protective gloves when dismantling an activate AIRBAG. Place the AIRBAG in a sealed plastic bag. Wash your hands in a mild soap solution and tepid water after handling an activated AIRBAG.
- Handle air bag and seat belt pretensioner components carefully. Avoid exposing components to impact, excessive heat, and moisture.
- AIRBAG should be stored at room temperature. There is a risk of self-detonation at temperatures above 239°F (115°C).
- Seat belt tensioners must never be exposed to temperatures above 212°F (100°C).
- Air bag modules or seat belt pretensioners must be installed immediately after it is taken out of storage. If work is interrupted, module must be returned to storage. Air bag modules or seat belt pretensioners must never be left unattended out of storage.
- Air bag module and seat belt pretensioner are sealed units. DO NOT attempt to dismantle or repair it.
- When placing a live air bag module on a bench or other surface, always face air bag and trim cover up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if accidentally deployed.
- DO NOT splice or repair air bag wiring harness.
- Air bags and seat belt pretensioners that have fallen onto hard surfaces must be replaced. Dropped or defective components must not be installed in vehicle.
- Never allow any electrical source near inflator on back of air bag module.
- DO NOT use grease, detergent or similar substances on seat belt pretensioner.
- When carrying a live air bag module, trim cover should be pointed away from body to minimize injury in case of accidental air bag deployment.
- Never apply grease to SRS connectors.
