Front Axle Hub RUNOUT: Inspection

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Saab 9-3. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove brake rotor. See FRONT BRAKE ROTOR .
NOTE: Make sure the cable to the wheel sensor is not damaged.
  2. Install Brake Disc Gauge (89-96-639), on the brake caliper upper mounting lug on steering knuckle with a 10 mm nut and bolt. Install a Holder (83-90-288), Dial Gauge and Indicator (78-40-622). See Fig 1.
  3. Rotate the hub and check the runout (the value between the highest and lowest reading).
NOTE: The dial gauge should read .001-.002" (.03-.05 mm) at each bolt hole. This is completely normal.
  4. Hub runout tolerances should not exceed .001" (.03 mm).
NOTE: If the measured runout values are outside the tolerances, replace the hub. See FRONT HUB ASSEMBLY .
  5. Remove the dial gauge and bracket.
  6. Clean the contact surfaces between the hub and the brake disc.
  7. Install brake rotor. See FRONT BRAKE ROTOR .
  8. Repeat the measurement method for the other front wheel.
  9. Lower the car and press the brake pedal in order to press out the brake pads.
