Fault Isolation Procedure

  1. Check additional DTCs:
    • Contact ECM.
    • Check for additional DTCs.
If DTC P1251 is present, follow the fault isolation procedure for that code and then go to step  3. If the code is absent, go to next step.

  2. Checking mechanical limp-home:
    • The flap valve has been turned by hand while the engine was running.
NOTE: The DTC may be generated if the throttle valve is in the mechanical limp-home position without the control module knowing it.
    • Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and wait 10 seconds to be sure the flap valve motor is without current.
    • Turn the pedal arm and make sure the throttle arm does not move.
If the function is not correct, go to next step, otherwise clear all DTCs from ECM and you are finished.
  3. Final check:
    • Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    • Clear DTCs (ECM).
    • Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
    • Wait for 10 seconds.
    • Reset the limp-home mechanism.
    • Clear the DTCs in all systems.
    • Carry out a drive cycle: Drive the car at varying engine loads and engine RPM for 5 minutes.
    • Evaluate the drive cycle: Check that the DTC has not recurred.
If the trouble code has recurred, the ECM is probably at fault and will need replacement. Replace with known-good ECM and retest. If no DTCs are present, then the steps taken to rectify the fault were correct.
