UNDERDRIVE Clutch: Disassembly

  1. Remove thrust washer. Remove snap ring and underdrive clutch pack. See Figure . Using appropriate spring compressor, compress clutch return spring. Remove snap ring and return spring.
  2. Install underdrive clutch drum in transaxle case. Apply air pressure to fluid passage on back of transaxle case. See Figure . Remove underdrive clutch piston.
  3. Inspect underdrive planetary sun gear. Using dial indicator, measure inner diameter of planetary sun gear bushing. Measure bushing at 3 different locations and average measurement. Bushing diameter should be .846-.848" (21.50-21.53 mm) with a wear limit of .850" (21.58 mm). If bushing is not within specification, replace underdrive drum.
