Road Test
- Ensure fluid is at proper level and shift linkage is adjusted. Transaxle should upshift and downshift at about same speed. See UPSHIFT & DOWNSHIFT SHIFT SPEEDS (MPH)
table.
- Slippage or engine speed runaway usually indicates clutch or band problems. A slipping clutch or band can usually be identified by noting transaxle operation in other selector positions and comparing internal units which are applied in these positions. See Fig 1
.
- With vehicle at a standstill, accelerate at minimum and full throttle. Ensure 1-2 and 2-3 shifts occur.
NOTE:
At minimum throttle opening, shifts may be difficult to detect. To confirm transaxle is in 3rd gear, shift to "2" position when a 3-2 downshift occurs.
- With vehicle at 46-50 MPH in 3rd gear, depress accelerator to resistance point. Vehicle should accelerate without downshifting. With vehicle at 34-37 MPH in 3rd gear depress accelerator beyond resistance point. Vehicle should downshift to 2nd gear and accelerate.
- With vehicle at 50 MPH, release accelerator and move selector lever to "1" position. Vehicle should downshift to 2nd gear and engine braking should be noticed.
- Stop vehicle and shift to "R". Check reverse operation by accelerating at full throttle. Check for slipping and/or clutch break-away noise.
- Stop vehicle on a hill facing downward. With vehicle in "P", release brakes and ensure parking pawl is operating. Repeat test with vehicle facing uphill.
