Replacing Control Unit For Steering Wheel Electronics
Information
The airbag contact unit is integrated in the steering wheel electronics control unit and cannot be replaced separately.

Voltage drop
- Risk of irreparable damage to control unit
- Risk of damage to control unit
- Fault entries in the control unit
- Coding in the control unit is aborted
- Malfunctions in control unit, even during programming
- Prior to disconnecting the control unit, switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
- Ensure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming.
- Connect a battery charger with a current rating of at least 90 A to the vehicle battery.

The PIWIS Tester instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases.
The procedure described here has been structured in general terms. Different text or additional information may appear on the PIWIS Tester.
- Connect the Tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
- Select the vehicle type if required.
- Select the Steering wheel electronics control unit in the overview. Press F12 to continue. The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.
- Coding/adaptation must be selected.
- Automatic coding must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
- The message "Coding was completed successfully" appears. Press F12 to continue.
- Extended identifications must now be selected.
- Check chassis number and change it if necessary.
- Maintenance/repairs must then be selected.
- Steering-angle sensor calibration must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
- Follow the instructions on the Tester. Press F8 to start.
- Function enable must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
- Enter the code. Press F12 to continue.
- Go back to the overview. Press F11 to continue.
- Read out the fault memory and erase it if necessary.
- Exit the diagnostic application. Switch off ignition. Disconnect the Tester from the vehicle.
- Carry out a function test.
