Replacing PCM 3.1 Display And Operator Control Unit

NOTE: Voltage drop
  • Risk of irreparable damage to control unit
  • Risk of damage to control unit
  • Fault entries in the control unit
  • Coding in the control unit is aborted
  • Malfunctions in control unit, even during programming

→ Prior to disconnecting the control unit, switch off ignition and remove ignition key.

→ Ensure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming.

→ Connect a battery charger with a current rating of at least → Nominal value: 40 A  to the vehicle battery.

If the PCM unit is to be replaced with a new unit, the navigation data must be installed using a Software Update navigation CD/DVD  .

If automatic coding is not possible, manual coding is to be carried out in accordance with vehicle equipment.

  1. Replace control unit. →  Removing PCM Display And Operator Control Unit  .  .
  2. Connect the PIWIS Tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
  3. Select the vehicle type and start the diagnostic application.
  4. Select the required control unit PCM 3.1  in the overview  .
  5. Select Maintenance/repairs  .
  6. Select Control unit replacement and press  [F12].
  7. Check the chassis number and press [F12].
  8. Write data  must now be selected. Then press [F12] to continue and press [F8] to start writing data.
  9. The Tester displays the message Data has been written  . Press [F12] to continue.
  10. Read out the fault memory  and erase it if necessary.
  11. In the Coding/adaptation  menu, select Automatic coding  and press [F12].
  12. Read out the fault memory  and erase it if necessary.
  13. Select Function activation  in the Maintenance/repairs  menu and press [F12].
    1. 13.1. The PIWIS Tester displays the possible enabling codes.
    2. 13.2. Using the vehicle-specific codes from the PIWIS information system, click on the menus, enter the relevant enabling code  and press [F8] to start coding.
  14. Quit the PCM 3.1  control unit. PCM 3.1 goes out of Service  mode.
  15. Insert the Software Update navigation CD/DVD  into the PCM3.1 unit (see operating instructions).
  16. Confirm the messages on the PCM unit, start the update  according to instructions and leave it running.
  17. PCM then displays the message Update to version completed successfully  . Confirm this info on the touch screen.
  18. Check the audio, telephone, TV and navigation functions, depending on vehicle equipment.

    Only for equipment variant XM radio 

  19. Drive the vehicle to a free area outside. Leave the engine switched on.
  20. Adjust the radio to Station preview.
  21. Contact Sirius XM OEM Call Centre at 1-800-852-9696. Press button 2 for "Other enquiries" in the selection menu.
  22. Give the customer advisor the radio ID/ESN of both the original and new PCM systems.
  23. Once you have successfully registered the system, check that all PCM functions are working.

    All vehicles 

  24. Read out the fault memory on the PCM 3.1  system.
