Information

This Technical Information replaces the following TIs for the 911 Carrera (997):

Group 0:

VEHICLE TYPE

911 Carrera (997)/911 Carrera S (997)/911 Turbo (1997)/911 GT3 (997)

CONCERNS

Main power supply switch (referred to below as battery disconnect switch):

SITUATION

Handling, removing and returning the battery disconnect switch.

To protect the vehicle battery while the vehicle is being transported, as well as during the idle period  at the dealer's premises until the vehicle is handed over to the customer  , and to prevent damage to the battery, vehicles are delivered with a battery disconnect switch.

The battery disconnect switch automatically disconnects the vehicle battery from the vehicle electrical system as soon as the voltage falls below  a specified voltage limit value  for more than 10 minutes.

This Technical Information is published in identical form in Group 0 (No. 2/06) and Group 9 (No. 5/06).

CONTENTS

The Technical Information is separated into three sections as follows:

→ 1 Handling the battery disconnect switch in the time period between vehicle delivery and vehicle handover to the customer

→ 2 Removing the battery disconnect switch (48 hours before vehicle handover at the earliest)

→ 3 Returning the battery disconnect switch

1 HANDLING THE BATTERY DISCONNECT SWITCH IN THE TIME PERIOD BETWEEN VEHICLE DELIVERY AND VEHICLE HANDOVER TO THE CUSTOMER

WARNING: Danger of accidents when driving with battery disconnect switch installed.
  • Never drive on public roads with the battery disconnect switch installed.
  • Test drives by the customer are not permitted - even on the Porsche dealer's premises.
CAUTION: Damage to control units and electronic components by switching off the vehicle electrical system manually when the engine is running.
  • The vehicle electrical system can be switched off and on manually using an external lever.

→ Only switch off the vehicle electrical system when the engine is not running.

Handling

The vehicle electrical system can be switched on  again with the lever.

Additionally, the vehicle electrical system can also be switched off manually  using the lever.

Switching on vehicle electrical system

Switching on the vehicle electrical system  (= closing the battery disconnect switch):

Before  switching on the vehicle electrical system, always ensure that the lever for the battery disconnect switch is in position 0  (→ Fig 2).

To do this, push in the lever as far as it will go in the direction of travel (-Item 0-  ).

Then pull the lever out as far as it will go against the direction of travel (-Item 1-  ).

This will close the battery disconnect switch and the vehicle electrical system will be switched on.

Switching off vehicle electrical system manually

Switching off the vehicle electrical system manually  (= opening the battery disconnect switch):

Push in the lever in the direction of travel (-Item 0-  ). The battery disconnect switch is opened.

Information

To protect the vehicle battery when the vehicle is not in use, the vehicle electrical system must always be switched off using the battery disconnect switch until such a time as the battery disconnect switch is removed.

Information

If the vehicle battery is disconnected from the vehicle electrical system with the ignition key inserted and the vehicle electrical system is switched on again within 100 seconds, a CAN time error can be stored in the airbag control unit and the airbag warning light is activated in the instrument cluster. The error is erased by removing the ignition key.

2 REMOVING THE BATTERY DISCONNECT SWITCH (48 HOURS BEFORE VEHICLE HANDOVER TO CUSTOMER)

CAUTION: Risk of prior damage to the battery following removal of the battery disconnect switch if power loads are switched on when the engine is not running, causing the battery to discharge.

→ Remove the battery disconnect switch at least 48 hours before handing the vehicle over to the customer.

→ After the battery disconnect switch has been removed, always ensure that there is no excess battery draw from the operation of power loads (e.g. Infotainment system, seat heater, headlights, etc.) when the engine is not running.

→ Connect a suitable battery charger to the vehicle battery when power loads are used when the engine is not running, and when working on the vehicle.

Removal

When removing the battery disconnect switch, the vehicle electrical system switches off as soon as the connector for the power supply of the battery disconnect switch is removed at the positive terminal  of the battery.

The battery cover must be installed after the battery disconnect switch has been removed. The battery cover is supplied in the front luggage compartment in new vehicles.

Switching off the vehicle electrical system causes fault entries in various fault memories. Adaptation and calibration values are also lost.

After removing the battery disconnect switch and reconnecting the battery, observe the work instructions after disconnecting the battery → 2706IN IN - Work instructions after disconnecting the battery.

For instructions on how to remove the battery disconnect switch, see → 966021 Removing main power supply switch.

When carrying out vehicle handover  using the PIWIS Tester, the fault memories  must be read out again and erased.

Information

Follow the instructions in the Technical Information for battery care and maintenance before vehicle handover → 270600 Battery: Battery care and maintenance/power supply/return delivery  (No. 1/06, available soon).

Reusable Parts

The battery disconnect switch is a reusable part that must be returned to PCNA after removal.

For instructions on returning the battery disconnect switch, see → 3 Returning the battery disconnect switch.
