W305 - UPDATE PCM SOFTWARE (SERVICE ACTION)
CONCERN
PCM equipped vehicles with complaints of time adjustment jumping and PCM display screen too dark.
FILING
Replace bulletin Group 9, #2/02 dated 10-4-02 in the Boxster Technical Manual and affix decal across page 344 of Technical Bulletin Book S.
INFORMATION
This is to inform you of a voluntary Service Action on certain 2000, 2001, and 2002 model year Boxster and Boxster S vehicles equipped with the Porsche Communication System (PCM). Porsche AG has initiated this Service Action to correct conditions that may cause the time to jump and/or the display screen not to be fully illuminated.
To remedy these conditions, the PCM operating system must be updated to software version 5.43. Use the part number listed below if another disk is needed.
Therefore, we ask that the vehicle's PCM operating system be updated during the Porsche Owner's next visit to your workshop.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
A total of 303 U.S. vehicles fall within the scope of this Service Action.
VERY IMPORTANT: Not every vehicle in the below listed range may be affected. Use the ranges below as a general guideline. Refer to Attachment "A" to determine if a particular vehicle is eligible for this service action. Alternatively, the VIN can be checked in the Porsche e-DCS/WWS for confirmation of an open service action (or recall campaign).

WORK PROCEDURE
Carry out the PCM update as follows:
CAUTION:
The following update must not be interrupted. If necessary, connect the vehicle battery to an appropriate battery charger.
- An interruption in the update procedure may cause damage to the operating software; the PCM would then no longer be functional.
- Remove the ignition key - to protect the vehicle battery.
- Switch on the PCM by pressing the left-hand knob. See Fig 1 , arrow "A".
- Press the Eject button on the Navigation unit, remove the Navigation CD and insert the update CD.
- The update procedure starts after a few seconds and runs automatically - it takes approx 10 minutes.
- Progress can be monitored by the bar graph on the PCM display.
INFORMATION: If this software level is already installed in a PCM, the PCM will recognize this and the software update is aborted.
- After successfully completing the update, remove the update CD. Reinsert the Navigation CD.
- Enter the campaign into the Warranty and Maintenance Book.NOTE: Any destinations stored in the PCM navigation system memory will be erased. They will have to be re-entered. Inform your customer accordingly.
To check the existing software version of the PCM operating system:
- Switch on the PCM by pressing the volume control. See Fig 2 , arrow "A".
- Press the main function key "AC" briefly. See Fig 2 , Arrow "B".
- Press the right-hand knob for approx. 2 seconds. See Fig 2 , arrow "C".
- The installed software version is now displayed in two rows on the PCM display screen: "PCM software: PCM/DIS V5.43".
- Exit by pressing the volume control knob.
