Transaxle Disassembly

  1. Mount transaxle in a holding fixture and drain oil. Remove selector shaft. Remove transaxle case-to-gear carrier bolts, drive out dowel pins and separate gear carrier from transaxle case.
  2. Remove input shaft front oil seal. On 944 models, remove input shaft front needle bearing from transmission case using a puller.
  3. Mount gear carrier in soft-jawed vise with rear cover facing up. Remove cap from end of rear cover by driving a screwdriver into center of cap and prying up. Remove bolt from end of mainshaft.
  4. Reposition gear carrier in vise, clamping lower portion of gear carrier. Remove cover attaching bolts and drive cover from gear carrier with plastic hammer. Remove mainshaft inner bearing race. See Fig 1 .

  5. Remove drive flange retaining bolt and drive flange. Remove final drive cover attaching bolts and pry cover from housing using 2 screwdrivers. DO NOT  lose magnet on rear of final drive cover. Remove differential assembly.
